Here’s what John Vicari has to share:
VISION
My teaching background taught me the value of viewing challenges from different angles. When facing a complex business issue, I often turn to my team for input. Their ideas frequently uncover solutions that we hadn’t considered, often leading to a stronger and more effective approach.
LEADERSHIP
Leadership is my passion! I realized that being a successful leader is not just about technical knowledge, but also about communication, empathy, building trust, and bringing people together toward a common goal.
I believe that effective leadership is built upon good communication, active listening and empathy. By understanding and supporting employees, leaders can create trust, strengthen motivation and build highperforming teams. This is what inspires me most: the opportunity to lead people, develop their talents and help a team to perform its best. I have found that motivating others encompasses understanding each person’s strengths, communicating in different ways, and recognizing what motivates each team member.
RESPONSIBILITIES
As AVP of claims, I lead a team of 16 claims examiners, oversee new loss set-up, claim investigations, fraud detection, and complex claim resolution. Ensuing compliance, quality, and timely outcomes while managing escalations, performance metrics, and process improvements to drive strong claims results.
Working with claims examiners, fellow managers as well as insureds, brokers, and defense attorneys, allows my teams to effectively manage claims from initial loss through resolution.
GNY’s story is one of both growth and purpose. Founded in 1914 by immigrants to serve those who had limited access to insurance. Yet what makes GNY unique is that it still embodies the same values of service, accessibility, and community that inspired its founding more than a century ago.
FAVORITE PROJECTS
Through my fraud investigations, I pioneered the use of social media analysis to uncover any connections between plaintiffs, legal representatives and other involved parties. This innovative approach transformed how we identify, investigate and evaluate potentially fraudulent claims. It also provided valuable insight into local and national networks engaged in organized fraudulent activity, helping to reveal patterns and relationship that might otherwise have gone undetected.
One of the most rewarding outcomes has been seeing other insurance carriers adopt similar investigative techniques, further advancing fraud detection efforts across the industry.
MENTORSHIP
While corporate mentors have been important, I have also continued to engage with both formal and informal mentors. Both my mother and wife have been key informal mentors as well as past friends from the education community.
One mentor emphasized, “Never give up. Pick yourself up, learn from it, and do better.” That mindset has stayed with me throughout my career.
And I truly believe in giving back and supporting the next generation. I currently mentor members of the claims examiners team: providing guidance, sharing knowledge, and helping to build the skills and confidence each mentee needs to succeed.
SUCCESS PATHWAY
My leadership journey began at a young age while working in my father’s restaurant. As I grew older, I was entrusted to make decisions in his absence which taught me the importance of responsibility, confidence, and putting people first.
My mother reinforced those lessons by emphasizing the importance of hard work, dedication, and perseverance. She taught me that success comes from consistently putting in the effort, staying
committed to goals, and embracing challenges. Together, those early influences shaped my character and laid the foundation for my professional journey.
I earned my Bachelor’s and Master’s Degrees from St. John’s University before beginning my career as an 8th-grade U.S. History teacher with the New York City Department of Education. During my years in the classroom, I discovered a passion for educating, mentoring, and building meaningful relationships.
Teaching provided invaluable leadership experience. It taught me how to: communicate effectively, adapt to different learning and working styles, provide constructive feedback, and help students build confidence and achieve success.
Transitioning from education to insurance was a significant career change, but I approached it with
the same preparation, determination, and willingness to learn that has guided me throughout my life.
From the beginning of my insurance career, I had a clear goal: to be in a leadership role. I focused on learning the business, building strong relationships, and taking on opportunities that would prepare me for greater responsibility.
Outside of work, I enjoy spending time with my family, especially keeping up with our energetic four-year-old daughter, who keeps us constantly entertained. I’m a lifelong Mets fan and have been cheering for the team since attending my first game at age 8.
My family loves exploring new restaurants. (Ask me about the best pizza in the NYC area!) When I’m not searching for great food, you’ll often find me at the NY International Auto Show or following Formula One racing, where I enjoy seeing the latest innovations from brands like Ferrari, Lamborghini, and Porsche.
